So, digital has gone and killed yet another icon of the 20th century — no more “shake it, shake it…!” Last year, Polaroid announced that they had “made the difficult decision to cease manufacturing of instant film products in 2008”, predictably attributed to market conditions and falling sales.

Fans and, in particular, owners of Polaroid instant cameras protested to keep the technology alive and the production of the film going. Save Polaroid rallied enthusiasts to take action and other sites like Polanoid and My Last Polaroid celebrate the medium.

There may still be hope if The Impossible Project succeeds in their mission to re-invent the Integral film. The team comprises ex-employees and have leased a factory in the Netherlands. They hope to produce one million films in 2010.

‘Polaroid: Exp 09.10.09’, an exhibition to mark the film’s final expiration date, is on at the Atlas Gallery. I sure hope that this is not the end.

UPDATE 16-Oct-2009: The Impossible Project inspires Polaroid® to relaunch instant cameras

Who rules the social web? | Information is Beautiful

Who rules the social web? | Information is Beautiful

Links in Print: The Story of a Beautiful Failure | Information...

Links in Print: The Story of a Beautiful Failure | Information Architects

iA pitched for the print redesign of Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger. One of the things they came up with was print links, highlighting keywords in blue. Apart from making articles scannable, it treats the newspaper as a cross-channel entity. Users can search for the keywords on the website and retrieve articles related to that topic.

Intelligent Home Screen | Larva Labs

Dan raises a good question: “what is user experience design by itself, those areas that aren’t filled up with other bubbles?” I basically agree with his answer: “not much, aside from coordination between the various disciplines, or what used to be called creative direction.”

The user experience designer is a jack-of-all-trades, able to communicate with all disciplines on their own terms and swap thinking hats without missing a beat. The user experience designer is the guardian of the user experience, the evangelist for the vision and the one that is responsible for moulding the solution when challenges undoubtedly arise so that its integrity is maintained. Oftentimes, this is in addition to their day job, e.g. information architect, visual designer, producer.

Precession (via Michæl.Paukner on Flickr)

Precession (via Michæl.Paukner on Flickr)

The Great Circle (via Michæl.Paukner on Flickr)

It’s a Flash site (designed by Perfect Fools) and you can’t actually buy anything but I do actually like it. The site is clean with inspirational photography. Apart from the falling leaves, the animation of the on-model shots keeps things interesting.

The Fashion Studio encourages mix-n-match to create your look. This is much more imaginative than those e-catalogues that mimic their print counterpart. As is now common, there are the social sharing tools to help you show off your style (and further spread the H&M word).

16 top augmented reality business models | Personalize Media

16 top augmented reality business models | Personalize Media:
By Gary Hayes.
